WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice (NY-04) released the following statement after the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 (H.R. 7120) passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 236-181. Rice is a cosponsor of the bill, which would make several key policy reforms to address policy brutality and systemic racism:

“In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, Americans across the country have been marching, protesting and crying out for change. And today, the House answered that call by passing a comprehensive police reform bill that takes critical steps towards ending police brutality.

“I was proud to cosponsor this bill, which proposes reforms to the qualified immunity standard, bans the use of chokeholds, creates a National Police Misconduct Registry and modifies the mens rea standard to hold officers accountable, among other critical policy changes.

“This bill will not eliminate systemic racism. But it will fundamentally transform the culture of policing to help us begin that process. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to follow our lead and pass this bill to finally bring justice to policing in our nation.”
