Rice Statement on New York State Bar Association Investigation into Rudy Giuliani
Investigation finally comes after Rice called for Giuliani’s disbarment in a 2019 letter to the New York Attorney Grievance Committee
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice (D-NY), a former local and federal prosecutor, issued the following statement today in response to the New York State Bar Association’s announcement that it is launching an investigation into expelling Rudy Giuliani from its membership. Rice previously called for an investigation into Giuliani in an October 2019 letter to the New York State Attorney Grievance Committee of the First Judicial Department, the committee in charge of investigating complaints against New York State attorneys, and called for Giuliani’s disbarment for his obstruction of the congressional impeachment inquiry into President Trump:
“While I commend the New York State Bar Association for finally launching this investigation, I am dismayed that action is only now taking place after years of Rudy Giuliani’s dangerous and unlawful conduct as President Trump’s personal attorney.
“In 2019, I wrote a letter to the New York State Attorney Grievance Committee requesting an investigation into Mr. Giuliani following his illegal attempts to obstruct the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Since then, Mr. Giuliani has repeatedly lied to perpetuate the President’s baseless election fraud conspiracies and his violent rhetoric helped incite a domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday.
“It is time for the Attorney Grievance Committee to take more accountability. Mr. Giuliani’s conduct has not only egregiously violated the Attorney’s oath he took to serve as an office of the court – it has incited violence on a grand scale, threatened our constitutional democracy, and put innocent lives in jeopardy. It is long past time for Rudy Giuliani to be disbarred.”
